Pataudi Palace History

Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi conceptualized and designed this royal palace in 1939. He was the 8th Nawab of the Pataudi family and he conceived this idea after marrying Begum Sajida Sultan of Bhopal. Therefore to turn his idea into reality he soon hired architect Robert Tor Russel. Also he hired Austrian architect Karl Malte Von Heinz so that he can oversee the construction and give his valuable inputs too. His main idea behind the construction was to make the palace look like the many other architectural marvels of the Delhi Colonial Style. And on the basis of that instruction this palace was finished.

Later this property was passed down to Mansor Ali Khan Pataudi and his wife Sharmila Tagore in 1952. However, then this palace was leased to Francis Wacziarg and Aman Nath. They were basically the proprietors of the Neemrana Hotels which was a network of non-hotel hotels. From the period between 2005 and 2014 they transformed the palace into Pataudi Palace Neemrana Hotel. This was a heritage hotel where people could stay. In 2011 Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi passed away and at that time the Pataudis were no longer the owner of the palace.

In 2014 an opportunity came to Saif Ali Khan Pataudi to purchase the palace back. The palace that he rightfully could have acquired hereditarily had to be purchased paying a hefty sum of money. But Saif Ali Khan did not hesitate at all and readily agreed to pay the Pataudi Palace price to get the ancestral property back. And currently Nawab Saif Ali Khan Pataudi is the owner of the palace along with wife Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Architecture of Pataudi Palace

After acquiring the property Saif Ali Khan revamped the old structure and tweaked a few things. He hired interior designer Darshini Shah and renovated the structure while keeping most of the old world charm. You can still notice a strong colonial influence in the architecture of the palace. There are elegant arches, majestic verandahs and massive columns that reflect the old world charm to the fullest. A lot of the interior of the palace was seen in the advertisement of the House of Pataudi. However let me take you through some more intricate details about this sprawling palace.

The palace has a total of 150 rooms here that includes 7 bedrooms, 7 lounges, 7 dressing rooms, 7 billiards rooms, multiple drawing rooms, multiple dining halls and so much more. There are opulent chandeliers, ornamental ceilings, intricate carvings, old portrait pictures, pathways, hallways, verandahs here. And all of these reflect the legacy of the days gone by.

One of the major attractions of this palace is definitely the entrance. The entrance itself attracts all the attention with blue walls. Also there are small swords on display that further reflect the heritage of the Pataudi Palace Bhopal. And then there is a statue of a tiger that again reflects the grandeur of this royal setting. Furthermore the palace also houses the tombstone of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi as well amidst the greenery.

What’s more?

Moving on, there are well built and manicured lawns at the palace which are ideal for walks or even horse riding. A number of times Saif Ali Khan was seen here riding his horse along with his wife and son. There are huge lounges in the palaces as well which are more colourful sections of the palace. With bright walls the lounge gives a high elitist and English appearance with its old photo frames and couches. This is also like a place where the family gets together. They also have huge dining with a 22 seater dining table that gives a royal and heritage look. But there is outdoor space with tables as well for some outdoor brunch or high tea options or some informal meet ups.

The bedrooms of the palaces are massive, comfortable and give a vintage charm. All the bedrooms are masterpieces when it comes to the designs. There are a lot of old photographs here as well along with ancient king and queen size beds.

The billboard room here is also huge that reflects sophistication and vintage charm. The vintage setting here is enough to transport anyone into the bygone eras. However what looks most attractive in the palace are the massive passages along the corridor. With black and white checkered flooring this speaks of a class. And with a lot of antique furniture and crystal chandeliers the passage looks like a dream in reality. Also there are verandahs here that exude an old world charm too. Moreover the palace also houses a swimming pool for the ultimate relaxation.

An all time Favourite Destination

A number of times the family members like Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Sara Ali Khan had shared multiple photos of various corners of the palace on their social media handles. They do not live at this palace permanently, but they keep on visiting the palace every now and then. From spending winter holidays to spending lazy vacations or hosting parties or hosting friends, this is their all time favourite destination.

Movies shot in Pataudi Palace

The beautiful appearance of the Pataudi Palace is undoubtedly also a favourite among film directors. And that is the reason why a number of shooting of movies and shows both from Hollywood and Bollywood took place here. Some of the movies where the palace made an appearance are Eat Pray Love, Veer Zara, Mangal Pandey, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Saif Ali Khan’s series Tandav. In recent times the palace garnered limelight for its feature in the blockbuster hit film Animal starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. The mansion shown in the film that Ranbir Kapoor and Anil Kapoor owned is the very own Pataudi Palace. Now you definitely need to see these movies again, right?
